Villa Treville is a cliffside compound of villas and terraced gardens above Positano, for many years the private home of the director Franco Zeffirelli and, since 2011, one of the most romantic hotels on the coast. Just fourteen suites are spread across the buildings and their gardens, hidden away at the quiet eastern end of the town.
It has kept the feel of a private house rather than a hotel — eclectic, theatrical, full of antiques and colour, with the sea framed at every turn. Cars stop at the gate; from there it is all steps, terraces and bougainvillea down towards the water. Few places on the Amalfi Coast feel so much like a world apart.
The interiors are Zeffirelli’s spirit kept alive — Moorish tilework, antiques and art, bold colour and turquoise upholstery, no two rooms alike. Outside, the gardens climb the cliff in a tangle of pergolas, lemon trees and flowers, with a small pink chapel among them. It is romantic, slightly operatic, and entirely its own.
Just fourteen suites, each individual and richly furnished, are set across the villas and gardens — many with private terraces, all with the sea somewhere in view. They feel like rooms in a beloved house rather than a hotel: layered, personal and quietly grand.
The terraced gardens are the heart of the place — pergola-shaded lounges, flowering walks and corners to disappear into, all stepping down towards the water. A private beach club sits at the foot of the cliff, reached by the hotel’s own boat or the steps, with swimming straight off the rocks and the Positano coast all around.
Dining is spread across the terraces, from long candlelit dinners with the lights of Positano below to lazy breakfasts under the vines. The kitchen keeps it Mediterranean and seasonal — seafood, pasta, garden vegetables — but the setting, terrace after terrace over the sea, is the thing you remember.
Positano spills down the cliffs just along the shore, with its beaches, boutiques and the church of Santa Maria Assunta; Capri, Amalfi and the Path of the Gods are all within reach by boat or road. The hotel’s own launch makes the coast easy. But with the gardens and the beach club below, leaving rarely feels urgent.
