A restored Menorcan farm estate — a lloc, in the island's word for it — on a low hill between the town of Alaior and the south coast, with its own vineyard running down the slope toward the sea. The white farm buildings have been turned into a small hotel without losing the feeling of a working estate, which is to say it is quiet, agricultural and entirely unhurried.

This is Menorca at its most pared-back: dry-stone walls, vines, a single long view to the Mediterranean, and very little to do beyond eat, swim and walk. Exactly as it should be.

The restoration kept the estate's plain Menorcan architecture and softened it for staying: whitewashed walls inside and out, beamed ceilings, terracotta and pale stone floors, simple wooden furniture and natural linen. Nothing is showy. The palette is white, sand and the green of the vines, so that the landscape always does the talking. It feels less like a hotel than a beautifully kept farmhouse you have been lent for the week.

Around twenty-seven rooms and suites spread across the old farm buildings and a row of garden cottages. They are calm and generously sized, in the same white-and-linen palette, many with private terraces looking over the vines to the sea. The cottages are the ones to ask for — the most private, the closest to the feeling of having your own corner of the estate.

A long saltwater pool sits on the hillside terrace, lined up with the rows of vines and the line of the sea beyond — one of the better pool views on the island. Around it are gardens, the working vineyard and the quiet of open country. The estate makes its own wine from these vines, and a glass of it by the pool at the end of the day is the whole point of the place.

The restaurant is rooted in the estate and the island — Menorcan produce, garden vegetables, local seafood and the property's own wine, served in the old farm buildings or out on the terrace under the stars. The cooking is honest and seasonal rather than elaborate. Breakfast, taken slowly with the morning light on the vines, is a highlight in its own right.

The estate sits inland of the south coast, a few minutes from the market town of Alaior and a short drive from the beaches at Cala en Porter and Son Bou. Both of the island's harbour towns — Maó to the east, Ciutadella to the west — are within easy reach, as is the Camí de Cavalls coastal path. Menorca stays low and green throughout, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that has resisted the high-rise fate of its neighbours.
