The Lumiares takes its name and its walls from the 18th-century palace of the Marqueses de Lumiares, on one of Bairro Alto’s steep, tiled streets. It was reimagined by a roster of Portuguese artists and designers, and it works less like a hotel than a set of apartments you might wish were your own.
Every room is a studio, suite or penthouse with a fitted kitchen, so you can come and go on your own clock — coffee at home, a late return through the bairro, no front-desk choreography. Above it all, the Lumi rooftop looks out over the city and the river.
Local makers shaped the interiors, and it shows: hand-woven wall hangings, black-and-white calçada-pattern floors, ceramics and warm wood throughout. The palette is confident but unfussy — contemporary work set inside the old palace’s bones. It feels personal rather than branded.
Studios, suites and corner penthouses, each with a fitted kitchen and the ease that brings. Sizes climb from compact studios to penthouses with terraces and rooftop views; throughout, the same considered hand — woven textiles, tiled floors, good light. They are rooms to settle into for a week as readily as a weekend.
The Almagre spa sits quietly below the house — a small, low-lit retreat for treatments and a pause between the city’s hills. After a day on Lisbon’s cobbles, it is the obvious place to slow down.
Lumi, the rooftop, is the hotel’s high point in both senses — a restaurant and bar open to a wide view over Bairro Alto, the castle and the Tagus. It cooks Portuguese plates to share and pours into the evening; sunset is, predictably, the moment to be up there.
Bairro Alto is at the door — Lisbon’s quarter of fado houses, small bars and tiled facades — with Chiado, Príncipe Real and the miradouros all within a short, steep walk. Trams rattle past below; the river is downhill. It is as central as Lisbon gets, and the fitted kitchens make it easy to live like a local while you’re here.
