Migjorn Beach, Formentera

Teranka sits on the long, low coast of Platja Migjorn, on the quieter southern shore of Formentera — the smallest and least hurried of the Balearic islands, reached only by boat. It is a beach hotel in the truest sense: the sea is a few steps through the garden, and the days organise themselves around it.

There is nothing showy about the place. Sabina pines, whitewashed walls, woven shade and worn timber — the materials of the island, used plainly. Formentera has always rewarded people who slow down, and Teranka is built entirely around that idea.

The hotel takes its cues from the Formentera farmhouse and the beach shack in equal measure: lime-washed walls, local sabina wood, palm-woven canopies and undyed linen. Furniture is low and unfussy, the colours drawn from sand, salt and faded green. Pergolas and curtains do the work that air-conditioning does elsewhere. The effect is barefoot rather than rustic — considered, but never precious.

Twenty-eight rooms and suites, low and white, each opening to a private terrace or a stretch of garden. The larger suites have outdoor showers and direct access to the lawns; several look straight out to the Mediterranean. Interiors are deliberately spare — linen, pale wood, a ceiling fan, the sound of the sea left to do the rest.

A long pool runs through the Mediterranean garden, ringed by thatched parasols and loungers, with a bar and shaded dining alongside. Beyond it, the kilometres-long beach of Platja Migjorn begins where the garden ends — pale sand, clear shallows, and the kind of unbroken horizon that makes a watch feel redundant.

Vert Mer, the hotel's restaurant, cooks the Mediterranean simply and well: island vegetables, fish from the day's catch, long lunches that drift into the afternoon under the pergola. Dinner is candlelit and unhurried. Breakfast, taken in the garden, is one of the better reasons to wake early on Formentera.

Formentera is small enough to know in a few days. Ses Illetes, often called one of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean, lies at the island's northern tip; the village of Sant Francesc has a handful of good shops and a Saturday market; the lighthouse at La Mola marks the wild eastern end. Bicycles and a slow pace are the right way to see all of it. Ibiza is a half-hour ferry across the water when you want noise again.
