Borgo Santandrea stands on its own stretch of cliff between Amalfi and Conca dei Marini, a white modernist building stepping down the rock to a private beach below. Reopened in 2022 after a careful restoration, it is one of the few hotels on this coast with its own beach club — reached, in proper Amalfi style, by a lift through the cliff.
The mood is unmistakably Italian and unmistakably of its place: handmade ceramics, sea light, and the whole Gulf of Salerno laid out beyond the terraces. It manages the rare trick of feeling glamorous and unhurried at once — a hotel that gives you the coast at its best without the rush.
The interiors are a love letter to Italian craft: more than a hundred patterns of handmade Vietri tiles, vintage and contemporary furniture from Gio Ponti to Molteni&C, and a palette of white, blue and sea green pulled straight from the view. Each room is tiled differently; the whole place feels collected over time rather than decorated at once.
Around forty rooms and suites step down the cliff, almost all facing the sea, each with its own tilework and most with a terrace or balcony over the gulf. White walls, blue accents and that endless horizon keep the rooms calm; the coast does the rest.
Two seawater pools sit on the terraces, and a lift drops through the cliff to a private beach club on the water — a genuine rarity here. Loungers, a beach restaurant and direct swimming off the rocks make the shoreline as much a part of the stay as the rooms above. Few hotels on this coast give you the sea quite so directly.
Dining runs from the elegant Marinella, the hotel’s sea-view restaurant, to Alici down on the beach for lighter days by the water. The cooking is Campanian and seafood-led — lemons, fish, good oil — served with the gulf as a backdrop. It is the Amalfi table done with real care.
Amalfi itself is minutes away, with its cathedral and harbour; Ravello’s gardens sit in the hills above, and Positano, Capri and the rest of the coast are an easy boat or drive along the shore. The grottoes of Conca dei Marini are next door. But with a beach of your own below, there is little pressure to move.
